I remember the early morning chill as we ventured into the heart of Mt Kosciuszko National Park. It was one of those rare days when the fog rolled in thick, wrapping the landscape in an eerie silence. The world felt smaller, quieter, as though the fog had swallowed all the noise, leaving only the soft crunch of the earth beneath our boots and the sound of our breath in the cold air.
We had set out in search of the wild brumbies, hoping to catch a glimpse of their untamed spirit, but the fog had other plans. It transformed everything. The ancient gums that dotted the landscape took on an ethereal quality, their twisted branches stretching out like arms trying to touch the sky. One tree in particular caught my attention—a gnarled and weathered giant standing alone, shrouded in mist. It felt like time had paused, allowing me to stand still and observe, as the tree revealed its history in the quiet moments between the fog.
Each branch, each curve of the trunk, seemed to whisper stories of resilience. There was something deeply grounding about this moment, something that felt eternal. The tree had weathered countless storms, survived the passing of seasons, and here it stood, rooted firmly in the earth, commanding respect without saying a word. I raised my camera, drawn to the way the fog softened the harsh lines of the tree, lending a dreamlike quality to the scene.
This wasn't the wild brumbies we had come for, but it felt like a gift nonetheless—an unexpected glimpse into the hidden life of the park, where even the trees seemed to have souls. I took the shot, knowing that this moment, in all its quiet magic, would stay with me long after the fog lifted.
