About the photograph
The early morning mist clung to the trees, wrapping the valley in a blanket of soft fog. There was a stillness in the air, broken only by the distant thrum of hooves. As the sound grew louder, the earth beneath me trembled. In an instant, they emerged from the veil of dawn—over 300 horses, their powerful bodies moving as one, charging toward the creek. The sheer force of their presence was exhilarating, hooves crashing through the water, creating ripples that danced in the morning light.
Their reflections mirrored in the calm surface of the creek, as though the sky and the earth had momentarily met. The fog swirled around them, adding a sense of mystery to the scene, while the early light pierced through the mist, casting soft highlights on their wet coats.
The herd was a mass of muscle and motion, yet there was a grace to the way they flowed together. Some galloped with raw energy, others moved in harmony with the rhythm of the moment, each step creating a symphony of water splashes and hoofbeats. The scene unfolded with a timeless quality, as though this mustering ritual had been taking place for centuries in this very valley. The air was filled with their breath, the sound of their strength, and the essence of freedom that comes with the morning.
