There’s a certain quiet that settles in when you’re surrounded by snow, especially in the wilderness of the Cascade Range. As we ventured deeper into the heart of Mt Kosciuszko National Park, chasing the story of the legendary silver brumbie, the landscape unfolded before us in layers of pure white and muted greens. The snow blanketed the ground, muffling every step, and the only sounds were the occasional gusts of wind sweeping through the trees.
We had been following signs—hoofprints lightly dusted over by the falling snow—when we approached a crest, carefully inching our way forward. Cresting the ridge, I caught a glimpse of them, almost like a mirage against the winter backdrop. Two brumbies, their forms steady and proud, standing in stark contrast to the whiteness around them.
They paused for a moment, as if they, too, were aware of our presence but showed no fear. There was a quiet dignity about them, a connection to the land that was almost tangible. As the snow continued to fall lightly, I raised my camera, hoping to capture the essence of this encounter—their quiet power, their resilience, and the beauty of their simple existence in such a harsh environment.
