About the photograph

There’s something about autumn in Macedon that feels almost sacred. I always find myself drawn back here, year after year, chasing the reds and oranges that transform the landscape into a living canvas. But this time, as I wandered through the familiar paths, it was this Japanese maple that stopped me in my tracks. The way its branches twisted and curled—there was a life to it, an energy that you could feel just standing there.

The tree stood like an ancient guardian, its limbs reaching out in every direction, dressed in the deepest reds I’ve seen this season. It was as though the air around it had been ignited, the vibrant scarlet leaves catching the light in a way that made them seem to glow. The colours were rich, but it was the form that fascinated me. Each branch, each curve told a story, as though the tree had shaped itself over decades, responding to the wind, the rain, the passage of time.

The rain had fallen earlier that morning, leaving droplets clinging to the leaves, deepening the reds and adding a kind of shimmering quality. The air still carried that fresh, earthy scent of damp soil, the kind you only get in a forest after rain. The ground beneath my feet was soft, muffling the sound of my steps as I moved closer, drawn in by the tree’s silent invitation.

I raised my camera, feeling the weight of the moment, trying to capture not just the image but the feeling of being here, beneath this living sculpture, wrapped in the quiet embrace of nature’s most dramatic season. Every curve of the branches seemed to guide my eye, drawing me deeper into its story. I wasn’t just photographing a tree; I was capturing the essence of autumn, the way it takes hold of the landscape and transforms it into something almost otherworldly.
