About the photograph

Standing here at the edge of the shoreline at Gibson Steps, I feel the quiet power of the morning. The limestone stack known as Gog looms before us, over 40 metres tall, carved by centuries of wind and sea. There’s a raw strength in this place, the air crisp and filled with the faint taste of salt as the ocean breeze brushes across our faces.

I point out how the wet sand mirrors Gog perfectly, capturing a fleeting reflection that vanishes with each wave that sweeps across the shore. This limestone giant, with its layers worn and weathered, has stood here for countless dawns, a testament to resilience, holding its ground against the unrelenting tide. You can almost feel the weight of time pressing down around us, as if every grain of sand and every rock holds a memory of the storms and sunlight that have passed here.

As the sun rises higher, a gentle warmth spreads over the scene. Soft golden light wraps around Gog, casting long shadows and illuminating the cliffs behind us. For this brief moment, everything feels still—just us, the sea, and this ancient sentinel, holding watch over the rugged coastline. It’s a reminder of the timeless beauty of this place, a beauty that endures, unwavering, as the world keeps moving on around it.
