About the photograph
I stand in the biting cold, my breath visible in the still night air as I gaze across the Tesselated Pavement, a natural wonder on Tasmania’s coast. The sky is alive, slowly unveiling a spectacle we had long chased—the elusive Aurora Australis. Above, waves of green and violet begin to dance, rippling softly over the rugged landscape, their colours reflecting subtly off the ancient stone beneath my feet. There is a sense of reverence here, as though nature is holding its breath, granting us a private showing of its beauty.
The cold settles in my bones, but I barely notice, captivated by the silent, ethereal dance unfolding overhead. The rhythmic waves lap gently against the rocks, blending with the aurora’s quiet glow, creating an otherworldly harmony between sea and sky. Alone in this vastness, there’s a sense of peace, of timelessness, as we share this long-awaited moment under the Southern Lights. I wanted to capture the essence of this place, a memory of resilience and wonder, forever etched in the heart of Tasmania’s wild coast.
