The Old Chicory Kiln

ARTIST STATEMENT

Just a short distance from home, standing as a profound symbol of history, is an ancient chicory kiln. This structure is emblazoned with the barely discernible inscription "Dr Morses Indian Root Pills". This quiet guardian is the largest known chicory kiln in existence and the oldest that remains significantly undamaged.

Constructed in the year 1885, the kiln's imposing size is a testament to the era's architectural practices. As time evolved, the design of chicory kilns underwent a series of refinements aimed at enhancing their efficiency. These modifications led to the development of later kilns that were more compact and uniform in size, reflecting the progress and adaptation of industrial practices over time.
