ARTIST STATEMENT

The black cockatoo, with its striking plumage, is a true icon of the Australian bush, perched high among the gum trees near Eynesbury. It wasn’t my usual subject, but on this particular day, I couldn’t resist capturing a high-resolution image of this charismatic bird. Their feathers glimmer with subtle, star-like flecks of yellow and gold, and the more I watched, the more mesmerised I became by their behaviour.

High above, the flock was busy feasting on gum nuts, their loud, distinct calls echoing through the trees. I noticed one cockatoo gently preening another—a quiet moment of connection, a display of the bond between them. It’s fascinating how such large beaks can be so delicate in their movements, revealing the depth of attachment between these birds.

Then came a flash of playful energy. A juvenile cockatoo darted toward another, intent on stealing the gum nut it was eating. A brief tug-of-war followed, the young bird winning, only to drop the prize a moment later without a second thought. Watching their interactions, I was struck by their gentle nature, their playfulness, and the subtle social dynamics within the flock.

It’s moments like these that make the black cockatoo so much more than just a bird in the sky—they embody the spirit of the Australian landscape, wild yet deeply connected, always full of life.
