ARTIST STATEMENT

The shrill ring of the alarm pierced the pre-dawn silence, rousing us from our slumber. Our mission for the day was to journey into the sprawling plains of Mt Kosciuszko to track down the elusive wild brumbies that roamed its vast expanse.

As we embarked on our expedition, the morning darkness was punctuated by the ethereal glow of our vehicle's headlights. The surrounding mountains lay shrouded in a thick, sombre mist, their towering forms reduced to mere silhouettes against the murky backdrop. The atmosphere was heavy with anticipation and an unspoken reverence for the wilderness we were venturing into.

Our journey took an unexpected turn when we stumbled upon a haunting spectacle - the charred remains of the bushfires ravaging the National Park in 2020. The sight of the scorched earth and skeletal trees served as a stark reminder of the devastating power of nature, even in its most beautiful settings.

I chose to explore this poignant scene and set my camera to shoot in black and white. I wanted the images to be stripped of any distraction that colours might bring, allowing the textures and contrasts of the landscape to take centre stage.

This approach was designed to let the image tell its own story, to allow the viewer to feel the roughness of the burnt bark, to see the stark contrast between the scorched earth and the untouched sky, and to sense the eerie silence that hung over the area. In this way, the textures became the narrative, speaking volumes about resilience, loss, and the cyclical nature of life itself.
