STATUS - ONGOING 2018/2019
The Capitol Theatre, located on Swanston Street, is one of Melbourne’s most spectacular buildings let alone theatres. It was designed by famous architects Walter Burley and Marion Mahoney Griffin (also known for creating Canberra) and opened in 1924. The theatre was then owned by RMIT University from 1999 up until it shut in 2014.
A collaborative documentary project with RMIT University sees the 580 seat Capitol Theatre’s refurbishment take place over an eighteen month period watching the iconic art deco building restored to it’s former glory.
